Toyota has engineered significant upgrades, introducing more power and torque along with new multimedia technologies, into its popular Land Cruiser Prado.
The result is higher outputs of 150kW and 500Nm from the introduction of a new 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo diesel engine which delivers improved fuel consumption and engine efficiency.
The legendary model also now comes equipped with the latest generation multimedia system with a larger display screen.
Power to the Prado
According to Toyota, at the heart of the revised range is an additional 30kW of power and 100Nm of torque derived from the switch to the new-generation 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo diesel engine, that is now mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission – upgraded from the previously five-speed transmission.
“Prado’s overlanding and towing credentials benefit from the higher performance engine that now delivers a maximum of 150kW@3400rpm and 500Nm over a wider 1600-2800rpm band,” explained Toyota.
The latest generation 2.8 GD-6 engine, which debuted in the brand’s updated Hilux, has received a raft of upgrades including a new ball-bearing turbocharger with a larger turbine and impeller and improved engine rigidity and cooling.
Better fuel economy is realised through optimised pistons and piston rings, changes to the cylinder block and head, higher fuel-injection flow rate and the adoption of high-performance materials for the exhaust manifold.
The Pado experience has also been enhanced through a newly-fitted balance shaft which assists to smooth out engine vibrations, improving NVH performance and thereby contributing to an even higher degree of refinement.
More efficiency and towing improvements
Even though the model now produces substantially stronger outputs, fuel consumption has improved to 7.9 litres/100km, while CO2 emissions have been reduced to 209g/km. Bult to go the distance, fuel capacity is at 150 litres with an 87-litre main tank and 63-litre sub tank.
Maximum braked towing capacity has been increased to 3 000kg on the 2.8 models.
A new-generation multimedia system has been fitted across the range. This now incorporates a larger 9-inch touchscreen display, expanded up from the previous 8-inch display. Included are enhanced voice recognition and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Owners and drivers are able to utilise mobile-phone-services such as Google Maps, Waze, Spotify and SoundCloud, among others, to enhance their driving experience. This while providing enhanced telephony and messaging interfaces ‘on-the-fly’.
