The competitive premium SUV market where price tags aren’t a consideration has a new contender vying for the SUV crown.

With Mercedes Benz, luxury, elegance and sportiness are given, so to take things to a new level takes some doing. It has been achieved with the Coupe, which is now offered in only one guise locally.

The GLE 400 d 4MATIC Sports Coupé is equipped with a powerful 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 243kW and 700Nm of torque, offers a brisk 0-100 time of 5.7 seconds and combined fuel consumption of 7.4 to 6.9 litres per 100km.

GLE Coupé sports impressive exterior design

The new GLE Coupé is 4,939mm long and 2010mm wide (39mm longer and 7mm wider than its predecessor). It has short overhangs and large, flush-mounted wheels that, together with openings in the louvre and the high-gloss chrome-plated underguard, showcase the SUV character.

The coupé lines are especially evident in the rear design, which has a characteristic ready-to-pounce appearance with elongated tail lamps highlighting the width of the rear.

More spacious interior with all the bells and whistles

The instrument panel, horizontally divided by a trim tier, transitions seamlessly into the door panels, and is complemented by standard sports seats and the new sports steering wheel with Nappa leather trim.

The SUV touch, meanwhile, is added by the tall centre console with the dominant grab handles.

The interior is larger than its predecessor, offering five occupants extra seating space and legroom.

The capacity of the interior stowage spaces has grown to a total of 40 litres and the boot has a capacity of  655 litres in its standard configuration. The rear seats with 40:20:40 folding split increase the boot to up to 1,790 litres – 70 more than in the predecessor.

While the loading sill is inherently higher than on conventional SUVs, the new GLE Coupé is 59mm lower than the previous model, and, when equipped with Airmatic, the rear end can be lowered by a further 50mm at the touch of a button.

Slick infotainment system

The GLE Coupé offers the latest generation of the MBUX infotainment system with a host of functions for connectivity, entertainment and operating comfort. These include intuitive voice control and the learning capability of MBUX, as well as an extensive range of apps that can be integrated into or controlled with MBUX.

Ground clearance adjusts at touch of a button

The new ride comes with a steel suspension that is sportier and firmer than its predecessor. It benefits from firmer mounting points and improved axle geometry that offers more precise wheel location and better shielding from vibrations caused by uneven road surfaces.

Airmatic is available as an option and has a sportier setup than in the GLE SUV. Its adaptive adjustable damping uses highly complex sensor systems and algorithms to adapt the damping characteristics to the road condition and the driving situation in real time.

In addition, the air suspension keeps the vehicle at the same level irrespective of the load. It can also adjust the ground clearance – automatically or at the touch of a button depending on the driving speed and situation.

Driving assistance systems

The new GLE Coupé comes standard with active brake assist, which can help prevent rear-end collisions, as well as collisions with crossing pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

Intelligent drive functions that can be ordered as options include the Active Distance Assist Distronic with route-based speed adaptation. This allows the vehicle to react to information from live traffic, even before the driver or the radar and camera sensors become aware of traffic obstructions.

When a traffic jam is detected, the speed is reduced to about 100km/h as a precaution unless the driver specifically decides otherwise.
