South African Grand Prix motorcycle racing prospect Darryn Binder has claimed his first win on the global circuit in Barcelona on Sunday 27 September.

Binder whose older brother Brad debuted in MotoGP this season started the Barcelona Grand Prix from the third row of the grid after qualifying in ninth.

The 22-year-old kept pace with the race leaders throughout the race and was well-positioned to benefit from some final lap errors from Jaume Masia and Celestino Vietti who both ran wide and were slapped with a penalty for exceeding track limits.

Binder wasn’t handed the win though and needed to get past Dennis Foggia on the final lap to claim his maiden Moto3 triumph. Binder proceeded to play a game of chicken with the Italian teenager pipping him and the chasing pack to the chequered flag for his first win in 93 Grand Prix.

Polesitter Tony Arbolino took second place in the race to leapfrog up into fourth on the Moto3 Championship standings currently led by Japan’s Ai Ogura who overtook Albert Arenas after the Spaniard crashed out in Barcelona.
