Audi has completely captured the high-performance station wagon market.
Its RS4 and RS6 Avants are highly regarded and offer their owners outstanding performance, without sacrificing the practicality of a station wagon. Audi is now celebrating its unique RS station wagon heritage with a limited edition version of the RS6 Avant.
Audi RS6 exclusive: Only 25 units globally
Tracing its inspiration to Audi’s original high-performance station wagon — the RS2 Avant — this new RS-edition vehicle is limited to only 25 units globally.
Making a modern classic
The original RS2 Avant was a revolutionary vehicle when it came to market back in the early 1990s. Audi’s product planners happened upon the idea of combining the utility of a station wagon with some engineering input from Porsche. The result was inspired.
Powering the RS2 Avant was Audi’s characterful and potent 2.2-litre five-cylinder engine. With the benefit of turbocharging, it was good for 232kW, which was a tremendous amount of power for a station wagon in the 1990s.
Like all high-performance Audis, the RS2 Avant distributed its power to all four wheels, via Quattro all-wheel drive system. With a six-speed manual gearbox, it promised a very engaging driving experience.
Porsche’s technical consulting on the car’s suspension configuration and brakes, would guarantee that promise to become reality.
Remembering the Nogaro Blue
Paying homage to all this Audi station wagon greatness, is the new limited edition RS6 Avant. Although it is a much larger and more powerful vehicle than the RS2, Audi scoured their colour codes to ensure that it resembled the classic RS-wagon.
Nogaro Blue paint distinguished the RS2 Avant when it was launched in 1994 and the limited edition RS6 is painted in exactly the same hue.
It also features the same brilliant red brake calliper finish and there are black design details applied to the grille, roof rails and side blades.
The blue colour theme is repeated on the inside, with Nogaro Blue stitching on the leather seats. Audi’s RS6 Avant limited edition’s steering wheel, seats and floor mats also include the signature blue stitching.
All the optional extras…and driving drama
Beyond the inspiringly historic colourway, Audi is building its RS6 Avant limited edition with all the optional extras you could imagine. It features a head-up display, soft-closing doors and heated seats for all passengers, in both rows. There is an orchestral-quality Bang & Olufsen sound system too.
The core driving drama associated with this RS6 Avant, is of course its four-litre bi-turbocharged V8 engine.
Producing 441kW and 800Nm, it gives the tribute edition supercar levels of performance, as denoted by its 0-100kph time of only 3.6 seconds.
In a world where tributes are often hollow and devoid of meaning, this Audi station wagon passion project, is very much a counterpoint of authenticity. And with Audi only building 25, they are sure to become future classics.
